What to do and when to do it

This is a page with a few sowing suggestions and tasks for you to consider as we go through the year.  I hope to amend, add to and change it as we go along as there is so much more to consider.  The weather will have a bearing on what's viable and I'll be relying on many of the other plot holders to help out with lots of ideas! SOWING SUGGESTIONS JANUARY Indoors/Heated Greenhouse - smooth peas (not wrinkled) - winter salads and oriental greens (to plant on under a cloche or polytunnel) FEBRUARY Indoors/Heated Greenhouse - smooth peas (not wrinkled) - winter salads and oriental greens (to plant on under a cloche or polytunnel) Airing Cupboard/Heated Germinator - tomatoes - peppers - aubergines (move to a warm, light spot once sprouted) Outdoors - broad beans (towards the end of the month) MARCH/APRIL Indoors/Heated Greenhouse - tomatoes - peppers - aubergines (move to a warm, light spot once sprouted) - celery - celerac - courgettes - squashes - cucumbers - melons - amaranth (african/chinese spinach) Greenhouse/Polytunnel/Sheltered Spot - summer salad leaves - french beans - herbs Outside (after risk of frost has passed) - beetroot - turnips - carrots - parsnips - and other root crops - mangetout - wrinkled peas - broad beans - summer salad leaves - brassicas - swiss chard - leaf beet - endive - spring onions - radishes - leeks - onion sets - seed potatoes MAY Indoors/Heated Greenhouse - courgettes - squashes - cucumbers - melons Greenhouse/Polytunnels/Sheltered Spot - summer salad leaves -  french beans - runner beans - sweetcorn - herbs Outside - all types of peas, broad beans, runner beans, french beans - main sowing of root crops - herbs - swiss chard - leaf beet - brassicas for winter harvesting - salad leaves - fennel (early sowing – may bolt) - sweetcorn (if mild enough) JUNE Outside - french beans - runner beans - root crops - herbs - swiss chard - leaf beet - salad leaves - oriental salads - fennel - sweetcorn JULY/AUGUST Outside - french beans (July) - root crops - winter radishes - winter swedes - swiss chard - leaf beet - oriental salads - late/winter salads - fennel - spring cabbage SEPTEMBER/OCTOBER Outside - spring cabbage - winter salads - bunching onions - overwintering broad beans - overwintering smooth peas NOVEMBER/DECEMBER Outside - garlic cloves (big ones are best!)
